Passing the RECA exam is a major milestone, but it is not the end of the process.
A lot of learners assume that once the exam is done, they are basically licensed. That is not how it works in Alberta. Passing the required exams moves you to the next stage, but you still need to complete the licensing process properly.
Passing the Exam Is Not the Same as Being Licensed
RECA’s current licensing pathway for new applicants requires more than just exam success.
New applicants must complete the eligibility process, finish recognized pre-licensing education, provide a current criminal record check, apply for a licence through an Alberta brokerage, and meet RECA’s character and suitability requirements.
So after you pass the exam, you still have work to do.
You Need to Move Into the Licensing Stage
Once you have passed the required exams for your path, the next major step is licensing through a brokerage.
That means:
- choosing a brokerage
- completing the brokerage-related licensing steps
- submitting the required licensing materials
- making sure supporting documents are current and complete
If you have not started thinking about brokerage fit before passing the exam, this is where many people lose time.
Your Criminal Record Check Still Matters
The licensing process also requires a current criminal record check.
That means this is not something to treat as an afterthought. If your criminal record check is outdated or not ready when you move into licensing, it can slow the process unnecessarily.
Timing Still Matters After the Exam
Passing the exam does not give you unlimited time to decide what to do next.
Learners have one year from the date they pass the exam for their first Practice course to complete the licensing process.
If they do not obtain a licence within that time, their Fundamentals and Practice exam results are forfeited.
That is one of the most important timing rules to understand after you pass.
It means you should not think of exam success as something you can leave sitting indefinitely while you decide on the rest later.
What Usually Slows People Down After Passing
The biggest delays after passing usually come from one of these:
- not having a brokerage lined up
- waiting too long to start the licensing application
- outdated or incomplete supporting documents
- assuming passing the exam was the final step
- uncertainty about what to do next
None of these are difficult in isolation, but together they can stretch the timeline much more than people expect.
A Better Way to Plan It
The smoother approach is to think ahead before you finish the exam stage.
That usually means:
- researching brokerages early
- understanding the licensing steps in advance
- making sure documents are current
- being ready to move once the exam requirement is behind you
The earlier you think about the post-exam stage, the less likely it is that passing becomes a pause point instead of a transition point.
What Passing Really Means
Passing means you have cleared a major requirement.
It does not mean the process is complete. It means you are now in position to move into licensing properly, provided you complete the remaining steps on time and through the right channel.
That is a good milestone, but it still needs follow-through.
The Bottom Line
After you pass the RECA exam, the next step is not to relax indefinitely. It is to complete the licensing process through an Alberta brokerage while your documents and timelines are still working in your favor.
Passing the exam matters. Moving promptly afterward matters too.
